Bakeries galore: A “sweet” revolution in Attingal

Attingal: With the inauguration of Al-Safa Bakery, near private bus stand, in Attingal by film actress Jyothirmayi last week, two things became very clear: (1) Attingalites have developed a taste for the bakery items and (2) running a bakery has become a big business in Attingal. Al-Safa Bakery belongs to the Al-Safa group who owns the big building near private bus stand and has a studio and a flux-printing division in the same building. They may be inspired by the incredible crowd in Modern Bakery (functioning in just the opposite building across Palace road). Sometimes people in Modern Bakery outnumber that in the neighbouring Soorya Bar – a clear case of bakeholics outnumbering alcoholics.

Years ago, when bakery shelves haven’t seen the sparkling array of pastries and other sweets that are on display now, and when Thumbs Up and Pepsi were only seen on television screens, the most famous bakery item available in Attingal was the fruit salad in Beena Bakery, on the National Highway, near the VV Clinic road. It is said to have attracted people from nearby towns like Chirayinkizhu and Varkkala. Fruit salad is still available in Beena Bakery and it is as good as it ever was. But the new generation is spoilt with so many options that the craze for fruit salad is diminishing slowly, so is the rush in Beena Bakery. But still there is steady business in Beena Bakery.
Modern Bakery, which despite its name is almost as old as Beena Bakery, is the most crowded bakery in Attingal. Most people don’t know the names of items on display there. They simply point the item or just say something like “that next to Jilebi” to indicate the item. Modern Bakery is famous for the Kabab. They also provide chicken biryani, which is the best parcel chicken biryani available in Attingal.

Aluvila Bakers is a rather late entrant into the bakery business in Attingal. But they have curved a niche in making halwa. The halwa in Aluvila is far better than that in any other bakery in Attingal. Aluvila Bakers is situated on the National Highway near east Nalumukku (near to Beena Bakery).

Chandrika Bakery enjoys good business thanks to its proximity to KSRTC bus stand. It is just opposite to the bus stand and is the only bakery there. Back in the 1990s, it was the bakery that first introduced hamburgers and meat rolls in Attingal. But later on other bakeries took over.

While these bakeries are jostling for public attention in the area surrounding private and KSRTC bus stands, Imperial Bakery stands tall in Kacheri Nada as the undisputed market leader in that area. The coconut cake and meat rolls of Imperial Bakery are famous. Another delicious item in Imperial Bakery is, surprisingly, lime juice.

Apart from these, there are lot of other bakeries. Indira Bakes in Kacheri Nada started with much hype, but failed to live up to that and now it is taken over by some other group and known as Zion Bakery. Owners of Saroz Medicals, also in Kacheri Nada, started a bakery adjacent to the medical store. The main attraction is something called ice cream Sharjah – a mixture of ice cream and fruit shake.

Kerala Bakery in BTS road is one of the oldest bakeries in Attingal. There are so many new bakeries in Attingal, but none managed to attract public attention as the above-mentioned bakeries did.

Tail piece: How to name it
The bakeries have developed their own nomenclature for their products. For example, coconut cake has been known as “Dilkush” in this part of the world. Now in Aluvila Bakery they have another type of coconut cake known as “Dilplus”. It has more coconut than in the normal Dilkush. Imperial bakery, who provides a very good Dilkush, also offers an equally good “Dilpuffs”, another variant of coconut cake.
