Traffic reforms in Attingal: bribery allegations cause a political jam

Attingal: Municipal chairman of Attingal yesterday cam up with an extra-ordinary bribery allegation against the Traffic SI of Police in Attingal. The chairman alleges that the Traffic SI demanded and got Rs. 2500/- each from two shops in Attingal. The SI is said to have demanded bribe to remove the “No-parking” boards placed in front of the shops. The accusation has revealed a rift between civic authorities in Attingal and the police department. They act as if to provide an illustrative example for the traffic reforms, which made both National Road on-ways, the Police department in going in one-way while the municipality seems to head on another direction. This was clear from local MLA Anathalavattom Anandan issuing contrasting statements: One day he said that traffic reforms should be taken off. The next day, after a high level meeting, he said that this traffic arrangement should continue.

The politicians also came into the picture now to muddy the waters further. A CPM strongman in the town Mr. Ramu questioned attitudes of his fellow LDF parties CPI and Janathadal in the traffic reform issue. CPI seems to oppose the new traffic system, while Janathadal demands innovation of certain roads to successfully implement the system.
