Five killed in accident in Attingal

Attingal: Five people were killed in yet another road accident here, this time in Korani, near Govt. LPS. A Maruti car, going to Thiruvanthapuam, crashed into a tanker lorry, coming from the opposite direction, around 6’o clock in the morning today. All five in the car died on the spot. Vijayakumar (28), Vinod Kumar (28), Subhash (25), Praveen Kumar (26) and Ajayan (24), natives of Nooranadu, Alappuzha, are the dead. They were going to Thiruvananthapuram air port to see off Vijayakumar who was going to Gulf. Vinod Kumar was driving the car. The cleaner of the lorry, Ani (39) also sustained serious injury. He is admitted to Medical College Hospital, Thiruvananthapuram.

There was not much traffic in the early morning. It is said that the driver of the Maruti car had fallen asleep while driving and had not noticed the tanker lorry coming from the opposite direction. The driver of the lorry which was coming in good speed down the slope could not apply brakes early enough to prevent the accident. The car was trapped under the tanker lorry, turning it into a mangled heap. The lorry carried the trapped car 30 meters, before the driver could stop the lorry. The dead bodies were recovered with the help of fire force. The dead bodies are kept in mortuary in Medical College, Thiruvananthapuram.
