Pinarayi captures Attingal too

Attingal: Elections for CPM Attingal Area Committee were held behind closed doors in Town Hall on Friday. Familiar figures were elected. D. Jayaram – whose family is Attingal’s answer to the family of Motilal Nehru in the Indian context, as his son Adv. C.J. Rajesh Kumar is the current Municipal Chairman of Attingal and his sister was Chairperson previously – is the Area Committee Secretary, and usual suspects like R. Ramu and M. Pradeep were among the members.

The CPM area committee elections have generated considerable interest among people and media this time around thanks to the open conflict between Achuthanandan and Pinarayi Vijayan factions in the party leadership. According to local media, Jayaram and Ramu are in the faction of Pinarayi Vijayan. The election was ‘won’ by the Pinarayi faction, according to newspapers. However, media was not allowed inside Town Hall at the time of the elections. In fact the gate of Town Hall was locked from inside and it was guarded by a party worker, a middle-aged stout man, who somehow managed to evade martyrdom so far. When I reached there, he roughly asked me what I want. I went there to visit the municipal library, which is functioning in the Town Hall at present. He looked at me thoroughly as if to check whether I am a CII spy. Satisfied I am not, he opened the gate. The hall, where the meeting held, was well-decorated with flex printouts great comrades – Marx, Lenin, Stalin, EMS, AKG and the like. When the results were announced, even the photographs appeared smiling as if they too are Pinarayi loyalists.
