Attingal Gears up for Christmas

Attingal: The town is slowly slipping into the Christmas holiday mood, with the closure of schools for Christmas vacation yesterday. Many people working outside Kerala have come back during the last week thanks to the holidays. The traffic is getting heavier and an odd Santa Claus was seen entertaining people in roadsides – and promptly collecting money for a good evening’s booze. Sales of Christmas stars and greeting cards have gone up substantially. Greeting cards are being sold at temporary stalls, arranged mainly by bookshops. But there have been complaints that good quality cards are not available in these stalls. A quick verification in one of the stalls near private bus stand justified this complaint. Most cards in that stall were either for people already in love or for those who are dying to express their hidden romance. One of my colleagues tried hard to find a suitable greeting card to give to his wife, but he could not find any.

One place where roaring sales have been seen is bakeries. Modern Bakery in Palace road has made large cake in the shape of the ship Titanic. Other bakeries are not indulging any gimmicks, but still are attracting good crowd. Traditional bakeries like Beena Bakery and Imperial Bakery are the other favorites of the people, along with a fast improving Aluvila Bakers. Four films are released here. Among these, Romeo, starring Dileep, has been declared a flop. So the Christmas won’t be that much merry for the poor actor. That leaves Katha Parayumbol (starring Sreenivasan and Mammootty), Flash (starring Mohanlal), and Kangaroo (starring Prithviraj) fighting for taking the box-office spoils of this year’s Christmas. Katha Parayumbol has already gained a good opinion from the first-day crowd. No news about the other two films.
