An Eventful Week in Attingal

Last week (August 10-17) was quite eventful. First there was the BSNL Mela, which drew quite a crowd to Municipal Town Hall. The event was held on August 12 and 13. The unprecedented success of the event has surely given a facelift to BSNL.

Two days after this event, it was time to celebrate the Independence Day. The celebration was on political lines, which certainly reflected our freedom of celebration. The people and organizations affiliated with Congress party celebrated it conventionally, that is, with the posters and flux banners of Mahatma Gandhi and Jawaharlal Nehru. Meanwhile, those associated with Communist parties, celebrated it as the independence protection day in typical guerilla fashion, that is, with the posters of Che Guevara! The comrades spoke in length about the need to protect our freedom at a time when Manmohan Singh is trying to surrender it to the USA by signing the nuclear treaty. Is this what they call nuclear thoughts about freedom? The leaders of BJP do not appear to care about August 15. What freedom? But school children enlivened the streets of Attingal, with spirited sloganeering in well-organized rallies. They marched along holding aloft the tricolour with true pride.

Today is Chingam 1, the first day of the Malayalam year. May be you don’t know it. Chingam 1 is celebrated as the farmers’ day in Kerala. That means the Department of Agriculture will conduct seminars, classes and other colorful events supposedly for the benefit of farmers in the state. Whether farmers actually benefit from these is another matter. It is the headache of farmers.
