Lakhs of People Offered Vavubali

Yesterday was the day of Karkkidaka Vavu. Lakhs of people offered vavubali during the last two days to provide peace to the souls of their loved ones. It is a Hindu ritual to ensure that the souls of the dead ones will not wander in the universe like uncontrolled space shuttles. Whatever be the ritualistic aspects and the reason behind it, people from all walks of life remember the departed ones with grief. Varkala beach is the major location for offering vavubali near Attingal. It is estimated that close to seven lakhs people came to Varkala yesterday and day before yesterday to perform the ritual. Some people went to the nearby Sivagiri Mutt for the pooja. Because of the recent terrorist attacks, unprecedented security arrangements were made to ensure peace in the area. Except for the usual skirmishes between private bus crew in their scramble for passengers, everything went fine and no untoward incident occurred.

Another temple thronged by people yesterday for performing vavubali is Madannada Temple on the banks of Vamanapuram River. One can see the isolated kaavu and temple from National Highway near Poovanpara bridge. This custom was started in the temple only last year. But this year’s rush surprised even the organizers who had made good arrangements in the temple for performing vavubali. People who were unable to go to the Papansam beach or other centers performed the ritual at their homes.
