Minister Slams Water Authority Officials in Attingal

Attingal: It was not at all a happy moment for Kerala State Water Authority officials in Attingal, even when what was supposed to be a landmark event was inaugurated. The Minister for Water Resources of Kerala, N.K. Premachandran, criticized the functioning of the Water Authority Department in Attingal in a strongly worded speech when he inaugurated the much hyped drinking water distribution project in Attingal yesterday. The minister should know well as he hails from Navaikulam, a place on the periphery of Attingal. The project took four year to complete. An amount of seven crores rupees is estimated to have been spent for this project. Even day before yesterday, there was an outcry about lack of drinking water facilities in seaside villages like Azhoor and Perumathura.

The minister said he received a number of complaints regarding the functioning of the department. His obvious reference was the infamous incident occurred some months earlier when the water from Vamanpuram River encroached into the drinking water reservoir of the department by smashing the protective bund, and people received salty water. He urged the visibly peeved employees to function in a manner that is useful for the public. He also had words of advice to the public. Water Authority spends eight rupees for bringing 1000 liters of drinking water to homes. But the department charges only three rupees from the people for the same quantity of water. Also, this year rain has been comparatively less. So, people should be careful about using water and should not waste it.

Almost all the political elite in Attingal participated in the function. Veteran leaders like Vakkom Purushothaman, Varkala Radhakrishan and Anathalavattom Anandan, and emerging stars like Municipal Chairman Adv. C.J. Rajesh Kumar were present on the dais. Usual suspects like C. Pradeep and R. Ramu were also present.
