Tale of A Snake with Legs

It was an incident that could have secured a permanent place for Attingal in the annals of zoology. Who in Attingal wouldn’t have loved a respectable place in history than the present place in the Indian history which no one in the outside world cares a damn? For the uninitiated, it has been etched DNA of Attingalites that their town is one of the places where the first sparks of the freedom struggle erupted. In fact, now we people have to fight a tougher war with the unkind historians to incorporate this “fact” into the popular history.

Well, let us come back to the original story. Some days ago local media reported that a strange type of snake with legs had been found in Attingal. Some youths who obviously had not comprehended the zoological significance of the creature killed it, just what all of us would have done to a stray snake. But the news was spotted by the professors and researchers in Department of Botany in the University of Kerala in Kariavattom Campus. They were pleasantly surprised by such a splendid evolutional wonder (that of a snake with legs) at so near a place. Without wasting much time, they set about to find more about the creature and to record its existence for the sake of scientific community. After a painstaking search, they managed to find the body of the dead snake. It was when they examined it in the lab that they found out that the legs actually did not belong to the snake. It was the legs of a frog swallowed by the snake that actually popped out! You can find pictures and a detailed report here.
