The mini civil station was inaugurated in Attingal in a low-key function last week. The municipal authorities had made elaborate arrangements for a glittering function. But torrential rains spoiled all the plans. The ministers and public figures somehow reached the stage, participated in the ceremony and left abruptly. There were no big claims or counter claims on the stage.
However, there were intense debates on who was responsible for "bringing" the civil station to Attingal among ordinary people. Pro-congress persons have no doubt that it is none other than Vakkom Purushothaman who had done everything for the civil station. According to them, the comrades cannot do anything good for the place. Everything in Attingal, including government college, ITI, and coconut complex, is the contribution of Vakkom Purushothaman. One die-hard congress loyalist claimed: "Vakkom may have felled a thousand trees and wiped out many forests in Andaman islands, but he has done many things for Attingal".
The comrades view this with customary contempt. This is on the third year of LDF government. They say they do not even need to claim the credit. It is as clear as daylight.
The BJP does not have enough stakes for claiming any credit. But they did make some noise by staging a protest for not inviting any BJP leaders to the function.
