As expected, the LDF virtually swept the constituencies here in the Kerala assembly election 2011. Attingal, Chiryayinkeezhu and Vamanapuram went with the LDF, while Varkala Kahar saved the blushes for the UDF by retaining Varkala.
Kerala have given a thin majority to UDF, but people in Attingal chose to give an emphatic no objection certificate to the LDF rule. However, it is not enough for the Left to get the landing rights to for yet another term in power.
In Attingal assembly constituency, Adv. B. Sathyan of CPI(M) defeated Thankamani Divakaran of Congress (I) by a big margin of 30065 votes. The Congress rebel candidate Attingal Suresh polled more votes than the BJP candidate, PK Bava. Two parties playing the extreme Dalit card, DHRM and BSP, got 1713 and 1235 votes, respectively.
V. Sasi of CPI won the Chirayinkeezhu assembly constituency comfortably. He defeated K. Vidyadharan of Congress (I) by a margin of 12225 votes.
In Varkala, Kahar won by a margin of 10710 votes. He defeated A.A. Rahim of CPI(M), who along with his young comrades, had put up a spirited, yet ultimately fruitless, campaigning performance.
In all these seats – that is, Attingal, Chirayinkeezhu, and Varkala – the victorious candidates had established a lead from the beginning of the counting process. Their majority gradually increased as the counting progressed. But counting threw open dramatic situations in Vamanapuram constituency. Initially, Adv. C. Mohanachandran of Congress(I) ran into a surprisingly handsome lead. But slowly the battle-hardened Koliyakkode Krishan Nair of CPI(M) clawed his way back. By half-way stage of the counting, he had gained a narrow lead. Then he consolidated the position to win by a margin of 2236 votes.
