UDF secured a comprehensive victory in Varkala municipality by winning 18 out of the total 33 wards in the local body elections. Indian National Congress won 17, while Kerala Congress (M) won one. Two of the UDF rebels too tasted victory. Election victories usually catapult rebels into the official hierarchy of the party. That means UDF now has the support of 20 councilors. This sort of clear majority is somewhat unprecedented in the recent history of municipal elections in Varkala. In most of the elections in recent memory, the winning front had enjoyed (if that is the right word) only a slim majority - one or maximum two seats. There had even been a tie, where the winner was decided by toss.
No such problems this time around. UDF leaders are gung ho about the victory. Mr. N. Asokan of Indian National Congress who won from Jawahar Park ward is tipped to become the next municipal chairman of Varkala. People hope that he, or anybody else the UDF chooses, will fare much better than the previous chairman Mr. K.R. Biju. Biju's inefficiency and hot temper had been a permanent embarrassment for Marxist rank and file for the last five years.
The following is a list of winners of Varkala Municipality.

Comments
As a chairman before ,the performance of Mr.Asokan was not praiseworthy.
The chance should be given to another personality who is capable of attaining the support of others in the accomplishment of a common task related to varkala's growth.
