Microchips for elephants

Attingal: A conditioning camp for elephants is being conducted in Sarkkara ground in Chirayinkizhu today. In the camp, elephants in the nearby areas undergo free medical check-up. But the main attraction of the camp is that a microchip, with a size almost similar to a rice grain, will be fixed behind the ear of each elephant. In the microchip, details of the elephant like its health condition, physical attributes, age, details of owner and mahouts are recorded. Each elephant is given a particular number and microchips are tracked based on this number. This is intended to ensure proper continuous care for the elephant. Chirayinkizhu Taluk Tahsildar, Madhu Gangadhar, said that only the elephants with microchips will be allowed to participate in festivals and other temple-related functions.

There is an old Malayalam saying Anavaayil Ambazhanga, which can be roughly translated as a tiny fruit in elephant’s mouth. It is intended to refer something inadequate in quantity for the purpose. Now, in this age of technology, we can very well say the same as “chip on elephant’s ear”. Hope this tiny chip is adequate for the intended purpose.
