Attingal Celebrates Deepavali in Style

People in Attingal and nearby villages welcomed Deepavali, the festival of lights, in grand style by bursting a flurry of firecrackers yesterday. The smell of gun powder and other chemicals filled the evening air, accompanied by the gun-shot noises of crude fire crackers. Children light up the night with an assortment of traditional fire candles, such as poothiri and mathappu. While grown-ups showed off their skills sparking off tharachakram and pookutty in front of the amused children. The enthusiasm among people for any festival these days is judged by the crowd in the market. Shops that sell firecrackers in Attingal had a windfall yesterday. Meeranasan’s shop in Market Road, from where many generations of Attingalites bought their first crackers in Deepavali, was chock-a-block yesterday. There were a number of other temporary retail outlets, which functioned in make-shift shops. There was heavy rush in front of every such shop, and fire crackers were outrageously costly.

The Proposed New Bypass in Attingal

A New Delhi based consultancy has submitted the project report for the new bypass in Attingal, with an estimate of Rs. 150 crore, to the Highway Development authorities. According to the new plan, the 12-km long four-lane road deviates from NH 47 at Mamam, from Mamam Palam, and rejoins the highway at Thottakkadu Daivappura Temple, near Kaduvayil Palli. The new road is going to be constructed as part of a far bigger plan to create a four-lane road from Cherthala to Kazhakkuttam, which in effect provides an excellent bypass traffic system between Thiruvananthapuram and Kochi. The construction of three new bridges (1. across Thottakkadu canal, 2. across Vamanapuram River, and 3. across Mamam canal) and one under passage at Ramachamvila has been proposed in the project report. In Search of the Common House Sparrow In Attingal

A bird race was conducted in Thiruvananthapuram city on November 15. About 54 people participated in the race and they found 145 species of birds. In a report about the event , what caught my attention was not what they had found, but what they had not. They could not find a single common house sparrow in and around Thiruvananthapuram. I thought sparrows (“kuruvi” in Malayalam) were in abundance in Attingal. So, I set out to photograph a sparrow in our region and prove the bird-racers wrong. Unfortunately, after one week of bird watching that prompted many villagers look at me curiously (some of them suspiciously – when they saw me with a camera near the lake where ladies take bath), I could only prove them right. Attingal All Set for Onam

Uthradam day in Attingal was marked by bright sunshine in the air and brisk sales on the street. People thronged the town with the usual Uthradam rush and bought whatever they deemed fit to greet Mahabali, who is almost forgotten amidst all these pandemonium. Everything was available by the side of NH 47 in the stretch between Kacheri Nada and KSRTC bus stand in Attingal: clothes of all kind, toys of all shapes, bangles of all colors, and most importantly, flowers of all varieties.
