What is the new traffic arrangement in Attingal?

The traffic reforms in Attingal are the talking points in the town for the last one week. The recurring accidents and two deaths due to the accidents have invited sharp criticism from many corners. But many people, despite their criticism, agree also that there is no other to way to reduce the traffic congestion in Attingal. One old-timer says that the vehicle boom hit Attingal before anyone realizing it and now the only solution is to construct the “promised” bypass, a parallel road to National Highway that would allow vehicles going to Trivandrum and Kollam continue the journey without entering Attingal town. Now let us see the new traffic arrangement in Attingal.

National Highway from Kacheri Nada to East Nalumukku (near KSRTC bus stand) is made one-way. So vehicles coming from the direction of Trivandrum should enter Palace road, which is also made one-way, from East Nalumukku and come to Kacheri Nada via Town UPS junction and Veeralam through Chirayinkizhu road. BTS road is also made one-way, from Kacheri Nada to Town UPS. The narrow road opposite to Municipal Office, leading to Palace road is also said to be one-way, i.e., entry only from Palace road. But auto rickshaws and two-wheelers are seen to enter the road freely from both National Highway and Palace road. Market road, a real bottleneck in Attingal traffic, is also made one-way from Kacheri Nada to Kuzhi Mukku. Vehicles coming to Kacheri Nada from Kuzhi Mukku should take the Market road–Girls High School road via Pachakulam and come to Kacheri Nada through Chirayinkizhu road.

So, one familiar with the geography of Attingal can easily understand that this arrangement is convenient for some and very inconvenient for some other. So it is up to people to understand what is termed in politics as the greater common good.

hi all,
I am also very much concerned about the ongoing traffic congesion which is causing a hell lot of difficulties for motorists as well as for the authorities...
Can anyone suggest better solution to tackle out this problem?
I do think that roads has to be built much more wider than it use to be...Unfortunately authorities are following the same guidelines from the early 70's or 80's ...how come it'll work out now a days with everyone ends up in roads with their means...
In no way we can ban anyone's thirst for new vehicle...Alternate is to provide better broadways for these vehicles.
Earlier i was amazed by our minister's comment on the subject of having an express highway project from kasarkode to trivandrum...The project oversees a 10 lane express road which will definitely provide the best alternative solution for the whole state...he just ignored that and said it is not applicable in our state...he was just ridiculos...
And my take on this is that there should be separate lane for two wheelers...bcoz they are the main cause of traffic jams in every situation...and everyone's license should be renewed...and the whole procedure has to be update with the international standard...
Lets all do our best while we drive on our roads...Be disciplined while driving...give room for others and do allow pedestrians to cross...

Hi Rahul

Thanks for commenting.

This post was written two years back. As we all know, the situation has only worsened after that.

However, I thought the traffic during this onam was not as horrible as the previous two year's. Some of the people I talked with pointed out that it is because the traffic police dispensed with the traffic signalling system at Kacheri Nada.

Anyways, your suggestion is really good. I too feel that two-wheelers and autos are the worst offenders of traffic rules. But I doubt its practicality. The problem is availability of space.

Hope the proposed new byepass, if at all it becomes a reality, would solve some of the problems.

BTW, do you have a blog? If you do, please let me know.
