Arrest in Attingal for selling pirated Windows software

Attingal: Police conducted raids in a computer-selling firm yesterday and arrested its proprietor for selling pirated version of Windows operating system. A police official said the arrest was made following the complaint from Microsoft’s legal cell. Similar raids were conducted in other places in the district such as Ulloor and Varkala.

Mr. Riju Mukund, the proprietor of Sooryatech, functioning near Sub Treasury, Attingal, is arrested person. He is the son of Mr. Mukundan, the owner of Soorya bar hotel and one of the richest persons in Attingal. Riju Mukund was released on bail today. Sources close to him said he got information about the raid, but he was of the mistaken notion that the software he was selling at that time is genuine. Both Chain Computers and Sooryatech, the major computer-selling firms, remained closed today following the arrest.

The arrest has created a serious confusion among computer users and owners of firms that use computers such as internet cafes and DTP centers. One of them claimed that 99% of Windows operating system he knows is pirated. There have been calls for wider use of Linux operating system too.
