A Dalit Uprising in Attingal

A group of Dalit activists picketed the police station of Attingal today. They were protesting against the alleged atrocities of CI of police, Mr. Velayudhan. By 11 AM, a large number of activists gathered at Mamam ground. Then they marched towards police station in Kacheri Nada. It sent the block-happy traffic of the town into complete chaos. The traffic became normal only after 2’o clock.

The picketers alleged that CI has been trying to trap certain youths in a Dalit colony in Valiyavila, Kaipatti Mukku, near Ayilam, in false cases. About two weeks ago, two women, a mother and a daughter, were hacked in the area. According to the activists, the police are not catching the real culprits, despite clinching evidence against them. Instead, the activists allege, the police are trying to fabricate a case against some innocent youths regarding this incident. For protesting against this, the activists first placed a number of posters lamenting the CI on various parts of the town. Now, they took a more straight forward means of protest by showing their might in full public view.

One should say that the picketing was well organized. A majority of youths wore black t-shirts as a symbol of protest. The sea of black t-shirts provided an air of macabre setting to the whole scene. Police officials were surprisingly sportive and adopted a saint-like patient approach towards the picketers. That is probably what most hunters do when they are actually hunted.
