The town celebrated the festival yesterday evening, mainly by lighting wax candles. The traditional Karthika food items such as Karikku, Kachil, Chembu, Chena, etc., were also devoured. A majority of the houses sported a row of candles on the compound wall. The load-shedding sponsored by KSEB provided an ideal background for those lovely candles in the wind. An exceptionally eye-catching scene was on Vamanapuram River at Poovanpara. Candles were seen floating on the river in darkness. Perhaps, it is a nice way to erase the bad image of the river and the bridge as a favored place for committing suicide. The number of people committing suicide by jumping into the river from the bridge has significantly increased in recent times.
