Onam Crowd Invade Attingal

Onam rush shifted to its highest gear in Attingal yesterday, the Pooradam day, as people in the town and nearby villages started their final preparation for the grand festival. The traffic, the first indicator of rush in the town, responded with the mother of all traffic jams. But that didn’t deter people from going out and purchasing whatever they wanted. Onam has become a grandiose shopping festival here too. Even old timers seem to have forgotten that it had been a harvest festival up until a few decades ago.

The main action has shifted from homes to streets. The main road in Attingal looked like a Broadway in cities, with street hackers urging customers from all the nooks and crannies of the road. The established shops too did their bit in attracting customers, with colorfully, though tastelessly, decorated shop fronts. Manjali Thrissur Jewelry must get the price for the grandest decoration: a mock up three life-sized elephants.

Attingal Municipal bus stand and nearby areas looked as though a temple festival is going on there. There are three jewelries (Hyma Jewelry, Manjali Jewelry, and Rajakumari Jewelry), four textile shops (Pooja Hyper Shoppe, Swayamvara Textiles, Rajakumari Shop, and old-fashioned Asokam Textiles), and the Onam Bazar from Consumer Fed on the small area in front of the bus stand. Add numerous street vendors to that, you have a paradise for onam shopaholics.

People spend time, not to talk about money, in textile shops, margin free shops, special onam malls, and jewelries braving the large crowds and heavy prices. On the day of Onam, they wear their new cloths, make as delicious food as they can, and then simply watch television channels.

Happy Onam to All
