LDF Wins Attingal, UDF Captures Varkala

LDF has won the Attingal Municipality. They have won in 17 seats out of the total 31. UDF has won 13 and BJP has bagged one seat. Partywise break-up is as follows: Of the 17 seats that gives LDF a slightly uncomfortably majority in the municipality, CPI(M) has won 16 and CPI has won one. Of the 13 seats that UDF got, Indian National Congress has won 12 and Muslim league has won one. The result, though not as great as many of the local LDF leaders and workers expected, gives them something to cheer about, given the poor performance of the front in other corporations and municipalities in the state. Meanwhile, UDF has captured Varkala municipality. The front has won 19 wards out of the total 33: Indian nation Congress has won in 18 ward and Kerala Congress (M) in one ward. Plus two of the three independents who have won too are supposed to support them. LDF has won on 10 seats: nine seats for CPI(M) and one for CPI. One has seat has gone to BJP.

The contest in Varkala went neck and neck till half-way stage of counting. But in the second half, UDF fared spectacularly by winning most of the wards. You can find the list of winners in Varkala Municpal elections here.
