LDF retained Karavaram Panchayath, albeit with the slenderest of victory margins. Out of the total 18 seats in the panchayath, LDF won nine [CPI(M) - seven and CPI - two], UDF seven (all seven bagged by Indian National Congress), BJP one, and independent won from one seat. LDF was saved from the blushes by the fact that the independent, A. Eesukunju who won from Ethukkadu ward, is actually a CPI(M) rebel. Party top brass denied him the seat, but he contested as an independent and won the seat. Now local leaders are trying desperately to woo him back to the official party fold and they are likely to succeed in that too. With that seat, the tally of LDF in Karavaram will go up to 10, which will give them a simple majority in the Panchayath.

Sukumarukurup, a veteran comrade and a president hopeful, suffered a heavy defeat in Alamcode ward in the hands of Mevarkkal Nazar. Another surprise was the performance of SDPI, widely regarded as the political arm of Popular Front. The party contested on four seats and won a total of 527 votes.
