Skies Open up in Attingal

Attingal is witnessing what could be the biggest rainfall in recent memory. Heavy rain has been continuing relentlessly for the last two weeks. Roads, which already were chaotic due to heavy traffic, have become a slippery mess. Vamanapuram river is about to overflow. In fact, it has overflown in several areas.

People living on the banks have left their homes and found shelter in their relatives’ houses iving in upper areas. One family in Nagaroor who refused to leave their house were trapped on all four sides by water. Later fire force personnel came and rescued them. Poovanpara bridge too is under threat. Water level has come up alarmingly.

Rain affected life in general and business. People have been evacuated from low-laying areas. The worst affected are merchants, as consumers prefer to stay indoors these days. Rubber cultivators too are worried, as rubber tapping has become an occasional exercise.

Heavy rain has marred the campaigning of local body elections in Attingal too. Most candidates had planned to depend more on door-to-door canvassing, as election commission had banned the use of flex boards. But they could not campaign properly due to the unrelenting shower.
