Banks in Attingal

Disclaimer: The following are my opinions. These are formed after my occasional visits to the banks. These are in no way the results of a detailed analysis of the functioning of banks in Attingal.

Some years ago I have read somewhere that Tiruvalla has the largest per capita bank balance in India. Attingal also held a similar kind of informal record. I learned from an official of Federal Bank in Adayar, Chennai, that their Attingal branch has the most number of outstation cheque collection. I do not know whether it still holds that record. But I guess it is unlikely so, given the number of new banks that have started operations in Attingal during the last few years.

The most prominent bank in Attingal had been, and still is, SBT. It is the official banking partner of Government Sub Treasury in Attingal. Previously SBT branch was situated near Municipal office. Later it was shifted to a new building, a few blocks further next to private bus stand. They also have an NRI branch opposite the Muslim mosque near KSRTC bus stand. The NRI branch functions efficiently and quickly. The same cannot be said about the other, general branch of SBT, where transactions usually get delayed. This is largely because of the crowd there. One must see it to believe the number of people inside the SBT building in the first few days of any month.

SBI was a rather late entrant into the financial scene of Attingal. It is situated opposite to one of the most famous institutions in Attingal: Attingal Tourist Home, which is a bar despite its fancier name! The bank enjoys a steady stream of customers and the customer service of the bank is reasonably good.

Federal Bank started its operations in Attingal even late. Interior of the bank appears glossy and well-furnished. But the transactions are not as quick and service is not as great as one might expect.

Indian Overseas Bank is situated in Palace Road, near Modern Bakery. It can be considered as the worst bank in Attingal in terms of customer service. Most of the staff there belong to the old generation and their attitude to customers strongly resemble that of the old-time village officers.

Now let us move on to the best bank in Attingal. In fact, there are two banks. I would rate South Indian Bank and Canara Bank as the best banks in Attingal. Both these banks got good and customer-friendly staff, although there are a few exceptions. The transactions are generally quick and information easily available. Normally, we do not have to run from one counter to another for getting information, as in the case of most other banks. South Indian Bank is situated opposite to private bus stand, in the same building in which Thrissur Jewelers and Aryas Hotel are functioning. Canara Bank is not situated facing the National Highway. It is in the lane adjacent to Municipal Office. It is located in a building just behind the building in which SBT had been functioning earlier.

Indian Bank is another long-serving bank in Attingal. It is located in Katcheri Nada, in the same shopping complex in which SR Theatre is situated. Although it looks like an untidy government office, the staff provide reasonably good service. Earlier, they had an extremely humorous employee, who used to enthrall the customers with his wisecracks all the time.

ICICI bank is the first new generation bank that started operations in Attingal. It is situated away from the crowd, in Chirayinkizhu Road, near Savithri Bar. The bank is excellently furnished. But the service of the bank, though it wears the façade of customer-friendly, is confined to excellent lip-service.

The other banks in Attingal are Bank of India, which is situated near SBT, Union Bank of India in Shams Complex near Kizhakke Naalumukku, Syndicate Bank near Municipal Town Hall, Thiruvananthapuram District Co-operative Bank in Katcheri Junction (their evening branch is functioning in the same building of SBT NRI branch opposite to Muslim mosque, and Catholic Syrian Bank in Katcheri Junction opposite SR theatre.
