September 17. It was early morning in Ayiroor, Varkala, which is about 10 km away from Attingal. Sivaprasad, an elderly man with a decent reputation, was returning to his house after the daily morning walk. Three people came on motorbikes and slit his throat without any provocation, using a sharp, long knife. The attackers were wearing rain coats and face masks. One Mr. Ashokan, who runs a small tea shop near the place, saw this and could not hide his terror. They did not spare Ashokan either. They waved the knife aiming the neck of Ashokan. Luckily, he managed to survive, despite being injured badly.
A few minutes later, a sleepy police constable in Varkala police station received a phone call from a person who identified himself as the representative of Dalit Human Resources Movement (DHRM) and claimed the responsibility of the attack.
The news about the DHRM involvement in the murder came to public only on the next day. By that time, the police had managed to nab some suspects. A person who claimed to be a leader of the organization approached the police station to obtain the release of the nabbed suspects. The police "interrogated" the leader without allowing him any human rights and they got several leads to the case.
By that time, something extraordinary had happened. A large crowd (just like this incident in Attingal), including women and children, gathered outside Varkala police station demanding the release of the leader. Since it was a harthal day (harthal in protest against the murder), not many regular commuters and vehicles were on the road. Police somehow managed to disperse the crowd that had become frighteningly large within a short period.
The question many people asked was that why they killed Sivaprasad, who had not had any problems with dalits or any issues of human rights violations. By all accounts, he had led a peaceful life and had not had any quarrel with anybody in the recent past.
The police too was perplexed about the reason for killing. The leader and the arrested men told them that it was to show their strength and to show the public that they are capable of anything. Killing an innocent person for showing off the strength? That too by an organization for protecting human rights? More about it in the next post.
