Attingal Municipal Library New Building Inauguration Tomorrow

The long wait for the inauguration of the Attingal Municipal Library (which is the popular name for its official tongue twister: Jawahar Shahstyabdhapoorthi Memorial Library) is over. The Chief Minister of Kerala, V.S. Achuthanandan, will inaugurate the functioning of the library in the new building tomorrow (November 21) evening at 6’o clock. One might tend to think that November 14, the birth date of Jawaharlal Nehru, would have been a better choice. But perhaps the non-availability of the chief minister (which is one of the main reasons for the long delay; the building construction was long over) might be the reason.

Anyway, the library is one of the institutions that Attingalites can rightly take pride for. It has an excellent collection, particularly of classic books, which should form a major part of any budding reader’s list of must read books. In that sense, it performs the function of a rural library quite admirably. Also, the library has been fortunate to get the services of many dedicated and knowledgeable librarians (there were some rare exceptions though). That proud tradition is more than upheld by the current librarian, Mr. Vijayakumar. The role Mr. Ramachandran Pilla, the chairman of standing committee for health and education of Attingal Municipal Council, played in the proposal, planning, and construction stages of the building must be lauded. The new building is a two-storied structure, with the library functioning in the first floor (which is at the level of the road) and a mini conference hall in the ground floor. It is situated near Pooja Hyper Shoppe near Kacheri Nada (where the old building was situated).

But from day after tomorrow tough work starts for the librarian and other officials. The books and other records have to be transferred to the new building. Computerized cataloguing of books has to be done. Hope they will also bring new books along with the old ones.

The bypass going through the area specially through Kollampuzha is passing inside through the THIRUVARATTUKAAVU DEVI TEMPLE. It is worthless idea, that cannot be afford. Because the temple is 700 years old and a cultural religious background at the age of thiruvithamkoor maharaja. The people in our area strictly obstructing this bypass.

so bye bye bypass.
